When creating the hand-painted textures for the barrel, we made it as non-destructive as possible, so that any one part could be altered, without having to change the entire painting. It also means that you can add extra layers and effects very easily, and without having to worry about overwriting any of your previous iterations.

The first stage is to get the UV map into Photoshop, so that you can accurately paint the object that you want to. Next, you need to add the base colours for each of the different aspects of the object, for instance, the barrel has two main colours, brown and grey, which are the base colours for the wood, and the metal beams that run around the outside of the model.

Having created the base colours for the object, we then created the divisions for the planks of wood, using the UV map as a guide. Colour can then be applied, as well as any photo textures, to make the design more or less realistic, depending on the style of work that you are using. Even more detail can then be added, and in this instance, I was created a worn paint effect across the barrel, using different layer modes may have improved the look of this painted texture, which is something to keep in mind for the future.
