The process I used to make the trees was fairly simple. In Zbrush, I used the Zsphere tool to make the basic shape of the tree. Dragging out and resizing the spheres to get try and emulate the natural taper that trees have the closer to the canopy they are. I also used this as an opportunity to alter the idea slightly, as instead of having the trees winding around each other, I decided to take them first away from the base, before coming back towards the top with one covering the topside of the top, and the other supporting the underside.
I also used the more organic workflow of zbrush to generate the branches, forking off multiple times as the trees got taller. The textures on the trees were made fairly quickly, I turned the Zspheres into a working model and used the buildup brush with a striped alpha to quickly get the effect of bark onto my model.
